How it's calculated

The method,
in plain words.

Based on body weight

Protein needs scale with how much of you there is, so the calculator works per kilogram (or pound) of body weight.

1.6 g/kg to maintain

Enough to keep muscle and recover well from training for most active people.

2.0 g/kg to cut or build

In a calorie deficit, more protein helps you keep muscle while you lose fat. When building muscle, it gives the extra material growth needs.

Spread across meals

Splitting it into 3–5 meals of roughly equal size is easier to eat and makes better use of each dose.

FAQ

Good questions.

Is too much protein bad for you?

For healthy people, intakes around 2 g per kg are well studied and safe. If you have kidney disease, talk to your doctor first.

Should I use my current or goal weight?

If you have a lot of weight to lose, using your goal weight gives a more realistic number. Otherwise your current weight is fine.

Can I get enough protein without supplements?

Yes. Meat, fish, eggs, dairy, tofu, legumes and Greek yogurt get most people there. A shake is just a convenient top-up.

How do I know if I'm hitting it?

Track a few typical days. Luntrack shows your protein bar filling through the day, so you can see the gap before dinner.
